Push‐to-Talk (PTT) Iridium

Push-to-Talk (PTT) is designed to be a secure and effective communications platform to connect organizations with their personnel. Iridium PTT is the first and only satellite-based Push-to-Talk service that can be used anywhere on earth. Iridium Push-to-Talk has become the only truly global push-to-talk system available on the market today through its constellation of 66 Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites.

This orbital infrastructure allows users to connect in much the same manner as terrestrial radio systems, but on a much larger scale and without having to build any vulnerable infrastructure on the ground. Not only is Iridium PTT physically secure, it is also one of the most secure methods of communications available. All transmissions using the system are sent using AES-256 encryption - one of the most secure encrytption stands available.

Talkgroups

Perhaps the most powerful feature of Iridium Push-to-Talk is the ability to create and manage "talkgroups". Talkgroups define both geographic areas of coverage, as well as what users (handsets) are included in each area. In any talkgroup that you create, you can have up to 10 service areas around the globe. No matter their geographic location, all of the service areas in a talkgroup will all be connected to each other so that all of the users in the same talkgroup communicate with each other.

Talkgroups can include one service area, or a combination of up to 10. PTT service areas are divided into three primary sizes: small, medium and large. Small PTT service areas can be up to 100,000 km2 which is roughly the size of Iceland or the state of Kentucky. In Figure 1, you can see a small PTT service area that includes the Paris metropolitan area which is approximately 17,500 km2.

Medium PTT service areas can exceed up to 300,000 km2. That would be roughly the size of Poland or the state of Arizona. Large PTT service areas on the other hand can extend up to 750,000 km2. Such an area of coverage is roughly the size of Turkey or the state of Texas. While a talkgroup can include multiple service areas (again, up to 10), they can also include service areas of different shapes. In Figure 2, you can see two overlapping service areas - one circular and one rectangular.

PTT Pricing

Iridium Push-to-Talk pricing is divided into handset charges and talkgroup charges. Handset charges are a flat rate no matter the size of the talkgroup and are typically $120 USD a month per handset. This charge provides unlimited usage of the handset in a PTT talkgroup; however, customers are able to add a standard voice plan that uses standard voice rates. Talkgroup charges are based on the geographic service area of the talkgroup (small, medium and large), as well as usage (minutes). Minutes can be purchased in set monthly allowances for a fixed price with charges should overages occur, or unlimited minutes for a greater monthly cost.
